Baking For Fun In Spite of Issues & Over-the-Top Oscars

2.27.2011 by savvysuzy

Okay!  It’s the night of the Academy Awards — do you watch or don’t you?  Well, if you ask me, the only way I can watch such excessiveness now –  is to be armed with my super-duper-technological device called the DVR.

I don’t watch TV without it these days.  I get to bypass all of the fluff and stuff and find little bits and pieces of this and that if I choose to.  Otherwise, I can push the delete button — Yay! — which these days happens a lot.

I can’t tolerate anything too long anymore if it’s not compelling and excessive.  Chalk it up to my maturity — I’ve become more decerning, that is.

In light of unemployment being high, underemployment, earthquakes, uprisings and various other atrocities that are happening in the world today — still these people like to show off.  But I do look at the fashions and who won the best actor, best movie or best song on occasion.

So did I see any of the movies that are being touted this year, you ask?  Well, surprisingly I did?  Actually, I think it may be the most I’ve seen ever in one year, because I don’t go to the movies that much.  Maybe two or three times in a year, and then, I may watch a few at home.  Here’s what I saw and thought of the five I saw last year.  *Update:  These are the most movies that I have seen that have won oscars before…

Alice in Wonderland ~ way too dark — did not like it at all.

***Inception ~ Had to see this 3 times — twice at the movies and once at home.  Confusing, but I really liked it.

Social Network ~ I found it to be very boring — could not understand what all the fuss was about.

****Toy Story III ~ Loved this movie.  Best of the three — Best CGI ever — Very compelling.

**Tron ~ Stunning to see and hear, but devoid of an actual plot.  It was so, so.

(Based on 4 **** being best ratings)

Also,  if you read my last post I was speaking of the following…

‘This month is National Bake For Family Fun Month.  I waited to write about it, because I have issues with wheat and carbs — so where is the fun supposed to come into play?  Well, like the children’s story “The Little Red Hen” (YouTube), who had to work to get some cake or bread made, depending on which version you read — this chicken (me) has to work at keeping baking or cooking from becoming a chore (Meaning I need to use other ingredients besides wheat and carbs more often than not.) It ain’t easy, but I’ll tell you a wee bit more next time (I don’t want to bore you.)’

Okay!  Here’s the thing… being that this is National Cherry Month, Avocado and Banana Month, Bake for Family Fun Month and National Bird Feeding Month, amongst a variety of other food related listings.  It’s all about me getting real about my food related issues by…

  1. Eating more veggies and fruits than anything else. Including a little corn, of course.
  2. Making most things from scratch (with fewer ingredients in them).
  3. Limiting the amount of ingredients in those foods, because some of those recipes are really long.
  4. Eating dishes that don’t need long recipes to prepare them.
  5. Replacing the foods with gluten in them.

So what kind of fun is that?  Well, it’s fun if I bake something that’s quick and easy like this for breakfast or dessert:

APPLE CRISP

  1. Chopped apples
  2. Tsp. cinnamon
  3. Tsp. vanilla
  4. 1/4 cup of water
  5. Saute in pan until tender
  6. Put in pie pan or casserole dish

TOPPING

  1. 1/2 crushed almonds, walnuts or pecans
  2. 3 Tbsps. of brown sugar
  3. 1 Tbsp. of butter
  4. Crumble
  5. Sprinkle on apples
  6. Bake until you start to see it bubble in 350 degree oven

(Although, apples have gluten in them, but they don’t seem to be as much of a problem when cooked).  Unlike the Little Red Hen, I  share with my family, being that I didn’t have to do a lot of work to prepare it.  I’d actually share regardless.
