Reflections on, LOST, Episode IX, “Ab Aeterno”, aka…

3/25/2010

Poor Richard…

We’ve been served up another a la carte dish from the LOST writers’ menu plot, and it was quite delicious. I was smacking my lips a little. How impolite of me. But this one was really good — I couldn’t help myself!

Okay! Analogies aside — where is everything going? I have no idea, but this one definitely has been tasty (I can’t help myself.) That being said, this episode was so poignant because we finally got “guyliner’s” back story, which played like a fine bottle of wine. It’s a long time coming, but well worth the wait. (This also coming from someone who doesn’t imbibe.) Although, I didn’t expect to be empathizing with Richard Alpert’s plight. I thought he was going to be more sinister. Of all the characters involved with the show, although limited, his is the second most interesting one, next to Desmond, who is my favorite.

Speaking of wine, the writers are using the bottle of wine Jacob referred to, as well as other religious, spiritural, and mythological references to flush this story out. The word allegory has been bandied about numerous times on various blogs and boards.  I had forgotten what it meant.   I knew metaphors and analogies, which they’ve used (and I sometimes confuse them), but I had to look the term allegory up.  Again that’s another reason I like this show it makes me use my brain matter a bit.

But, and it’s a big — BUT — I don’t like to analyze everything too much. I prefer to take each episode as it comes, because otherwise it’s going to hurt my head. Maybe I’ll look for references to things that I missed on occasion.  This show has left a trail of numerous plot holes and dead ends scattered around the island.  Remember they couldn’t stop pushing the computer key in the Swan hatch?  Where did that lead? Exactly!!!

Maybe it will be tied in somewhere down the road.  What I’m saying is that all this “Good vs. Evil” plot is all fine and dandy, but coming from human beings, who are imperfect, I’m not going to be dissecting this as if I were going to find the “Holy Grail“.  For me, I would attribute this type of meaning more so to the “Bible“, but the writers could possibly be using the show to serve up a heavier analogy about Man’s existence here on earth.  Who knows?

However, the beauty of this show is it’s imperfections. Seeing how these writers have used their skills to make a living at serving up fodder for the audience to watch — has been worth staying tuned in for the long haul. They’ve done a great job for the most part and should be rewarded — I’m sure they have been.

What it all comes down to for me is that the ending is not anti-climatic or predictable.  Remember when Charlie was predicted to die in Season 3, and Desmond told him in several episodes (the spoilers abounded on various boards and blogs) that it was curtains for him.  I said ‘naw — it won’t be that obvious.’ And what do you know — he found his demise — just like they said. The writers can’t make the finale that obvious. That would be a total cop out for sure.

So we’ll see how Widmore, Desmond, Richard, and the other Islanders will be playing into Jacob and the Lock Poseurs’ little game. Hopefully the writers will be serving us up a really scrumptious meal that they’ve been preparing up in their kitchen. If they can season that with “Meaning” that will be even better. Nevertheless, I definitely will RSVP my invitation to reserve my spot at the table. Until then…

I’m Still Counting Down

Until the Next Episode!

“LOST” Quote, Season 6, Episode IX, “Ab Aeterno (Eternity)”…

ABC TV

RICHARD: “(Laughs) Uhh.. I have no idea what we do next. You didn’t tell your friend that I was trying to kill myself when you found me? Does that sound like someone who has a plan?
ILANA: Why would Jacob say you knew what to do if–
RICHARD: Because everything he ever said is a lie.
JACK: What are you talking about?
RICHARD: (Stares at Jack for a few seconds) You wanna know a secret, Jack? Something I’ve known a long, long time. You’re dead.
HURLEY: You mean that figuratively right?
RICHARD: No, I mean literally. We are all dead, every single one of us. And this, this, all this, it’s not what you think it is. We’re not on an island, we never were. We’re in Hell. So, I’m not interested in what Jacob said. In fact, maybe it’s time to stop listening to him, and we started listening to someone else, and that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.
[There is a long pause as Richard gets up, takes his torch, and heads toward the jungle.]”

While you’re here why not check out out my past reviews or, more so, just commenting much of the time… also you can go to ABC.com to see a recent episode — it’s just my serving suggestion.
