I: Is for Irresistible Leaves Detour to Route 66 & Lincoln Highway

9.18.2008 by Savvy Suzy

…in the four states that start with the letter “I”.  The first being the state of Idaho (12).

It’s one of those states that I’ve never been to before, but as you can see, there are some striking examples to be seen in this wide open state.

Although, I do know that this state produces something that is used widely by people — called potatoes.

“I” is for another state called Illinois, the land of Lincoln, and now the home of the Democratic Presidential candidate, Senator, Barack Obama.  Also, former, President, Ronald Reagon, hailed from here, too. This is not only a state I’ve been to — it just happens to be the state where I was born.

I was going to give this state another photo, but since I have so many photos, I’ll leave it at the one this time.

Here’s the third state that starts with the letter “I”, called Indiana (14).  Yes it’s right next to the previous state Illinois.  Being that it was so close, yes I have been there before.  These are some of the states that compose the heartland.

Last but not least, another “I” state and a neighbor to the previous two (although, Idaho is stuck out there all by it’s lonesome, which suits them just fine), is a state called Iowa (15).

Yes, I certainly did, visit this state, but not until after I had moved to California and traveling back there went through here.  A lot of people didn’t travel as much back in the `50’s and `60’s.  The Interstate Highway System was just getting started.  It’s something that we depend on now in this country, but hasn’t been around really that long.  It’s still going through growing pains.

I was just wondering…this sounds like fun…to travel Route 66 from California to Chicago or vice versa. It is also fondly known as the, “Mother Road“, by many.  I ‘m wondering what would it be like to travel this in the fall to do some leaf peeping at nature’s annual show? Hmmmm…

ROAD DETOURS:

Has anyone out there actually taken a road trip on Route 66 or Lincoln Highway (It would be fun to do both — separately, of course.), for that matter, in the fall or otherwise?  Let me know.

Ran into a bit of a comparison, or did I, between Route 66 and Lincoln Highway, as to which is more important?  You see, I’ve actually been on parts of these two historic highways.  I’m adding more links than I intended. Plus I didn’t find any turning foliage sites, but I wanted to pay more homage to Lincoln Highway, since it was the “Grand Daddy” of all the roads in America.  Anyway here is what I uncovered…

Little Bit of News:

On October 29th, 2008, at 8 p.m., PBS is offering a documentary called, “A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway”, here’s an excerpt:

  1. Both 66 and the Lincoln Highway have many cool things to see and do, and they’re really not that different. Promotion of 66 often leans towards a 1950s rock’n roll style while the LH more represents early autos struggling to cross the country, but in reality both roads offer a full range of motoring and roadside history.

And thanks for mentioning LH News!

  2. Savvy Suzy,
I enjoyed reading your blog and thought you’d like to check out our website. Illinois has the only part of the first transcontinental highway that has received the National Scenic Byway designation. Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition is the organization that manages the byway. We have several exhibits, 3 murals (with 40 more coming), and are in the process of building 17 interpretive gazebos. All of these items will enhance the traveling experience for visitors as they make their way across our wonderful state. If you’d like a free visitor guide, please let me know!

    Thank you,
    Diane

Please feel free to add our link to your site so others may read about Illinois Lincoln Highway.
    Thank you,
    Diane

  4. Hi Diane,

Thanks for stopping by to read about my leafy quest. I didn’t realize how important Lincoln highway was, until reading the Wikipedia description.

I had forgotten that I had road on Lincoln Highway before, just as I had driven Route 66.

I think they both are pieces of Americana that need to be preserved, and I’m glad to see that your site is helping to do just that.

Keep up the good work and thank you for allowing me to use your link.

    Suzy :)

  5. Hey Brian,

Yes, I’m finding out that both highways are very important historical & nostalgic aspects of this country’s history during different eras.

Thanks for allowing me to use your link, and I will be stopping in again.

And thank you for stopping by and drop in again. I think it’s really cool to have people who I link to comment back!

    Suzy :)

  6. @Diane: Hi again Diane,

I’m happy that you enjoyed reading my blog, and yes I have checked out your blog and enjoyed what I read. I definitely will be going back!

It sounds like your group has some exciting projects in the works to help promote this historical landmark.

I would like to drive that route one day — in the fall — to see all the happenings along the way.

Thanks again for stopping by my cybernest, and come again any time. Also, I’ve already added your link, so thanks for offering it up.

    Keep up the good work!

    Suzy :)
