Ode to Moms
5.09.2008 by Savvy SuzyThis is the month we celebrate all the moms — of which I am one. It’s been the most life changing experience of my life! It is the main event that helped me start taking the “blinders” off. Being married and having children contributed to my growth, in untold ways.
But in honor of the day, I decided to add this poem. I was going to use it in another venue, but thought it would fit in perfectly with the topic of the month. Whether I’m employed or unemployed — maintaining a household means one never really runs out of work, whether you’re a mother or not there’s always something purposeful to do:

Breakfast, lunch & dinner…
“Hold the mayo!”…
“Make mine well done!”
Kinda makes you feel like a short order cook!
~
Dishes, laundry, dusting and we can’t forget grocery shopping –
A somewhat regular and fairly efficient maid service and concierge –
Plus we do the basics to maintain the books!
~
Just a few of the everyday jobs done without social security. But, alas — someone estimated a $138,000.00 pay for this work –
However, one can’t get excited over something that can be slighted
and at times feels like a state called obscurity!
~
Day in and day out we keep doing the same stuff,
along with lots of unexpected tidbits,
such as an outside job,
that keep us on our toes!
Squeezing in such things as listening when we can,
giving the best sage advice we know how to give,
and finding a way to empathize when we have to give out the no’s!
~
These are the seemingly little things of life,
that come along with this challenging position –
that are truly priceless and can go unaccounted for but are rife.
Nonetheless, we do them anyway, because it’s in our disposition.
~
Hence, this is not just a job, but an ongoing work of Passion –
whether we’re paid or not!
We’re doing this ongoing ‘life art’ –
out of Love, Joy and Compassion.
This is part of the Big “pay off”,
because it should come from the Heart!!!
~
We’re earning our title of Mom, Mommie or Moma,
continuously along the way.
This is why I definitely can’t go without saying,
Have a Happy Mothers’ Day,
not only today,
but every day!

(Be kind! This is only the second or third poem that I’ve written in distant memory (It shows — you’re probably saying:) I submitted it to an online service for approval but it was declined. So you get to be the first to see my rejected poem. It’s my own personal “wiki” poem, that I’ll keep tweeking it up until I’ve had enough.:) Don’t feel slighted Dads. I have one for you coming up next month. I’m sure you’re ecstatic!
