Me vs. My Neighbor’s Cat
9.02.2007 by Savvy SuzyI’m getting ready to go “out on a limb” with this article post. There are so many people who have cats and dogs these days (or so it seems), but not me. They can be cute little critters, but they require a lot of time and effort. Plus, you hear more and more about people getting bitten by dogs (while the owner keeps saying — “Oh! They don’t bite.”) Okay! The real reason I don’t have a cat or dog is, I don’t like them indoors — they’re too much trouble — too expensive and besides, I’ve got allergies.
I bring it up because they’re all over the place. There are a lot of people who shouldn’t have them, because they’re not up to what it takes to maintain these pets (including not allowing them to roam onto neighbors’ properties.) This is exactly what I’m going through with my neighbor. Her cat wants to use my garden space as its own personal litter box. Plus there have been other cats that have come and sprayed my door numerous times. The smell wreaks for hours.
I’ve arranged chicken wire strategically in various angles. Plus I was also advised to put down pepper near strategic places like my door. The cat has crawled under the wire numerous times, stepped over the pepper to do its thing, and creepin’ on my roof at night. So I ended up going to talk to my neighbor about the situation once. She responded that “cats need to roam”, and “you can do whatever you want” to keep her at bay or something to that effect.
Well, I’ve sprayed water at her, put down orange peels, and various other things. This cat is very ruthless and wants to get her way. She thinks this is all a game that she’s determined to win. In response to the conversation — my neighbor goes and gets another cat. So when I see the first cat bringing the newer cat over my fence — I say “enough is enough” — I go tell the neighbor that ‘this is not a neighborly thing to do.’
That conversation did improve conditions quite a bit for some time, but I saw the cat starting to come over again, recently. I ran out with the water and away she went. My reason for venting about this was in an attempt to find out if anyone has had similar problems with cats and what have you done? I’d really like to hear your stories, or if you have any advice on what I might attempt to do next. Because what about people — don’t we have rights anymore or are they letting these animals rule and forgetting about respecting their fellow citizens?
