Is College Necessary?
9.02.2007 by Savvy SuzyI’m not against schools. I don’t think the four year universities are all what they’re “cracked up” to be. Also, there is a lot of excess baggage coming with that degree. Unnecessary required courses that one may never use or need. Plus the costs for room and board, and the overrated socialization that is done at such schools just adds to the expense. There are plenty of opportunities to socialize in everyday life.
Whereas, I think the junior colleges and trade schools are very useful tools. They allow people to pick and choose what they want and need “ala carte’”– depending on their own point of reference. Plus, now we have “virtual schools”, which can be used according to your own time and schedule.
John Taylor Gatto was a former teacher in the New York Public School System, who has written a number of books and articles on our school systems. This particular article I found in a homeschool publication called the “LINK”. The article title is, “The Richest Man in the World Has Some Advice for Us about College…” , that goes to the heart of the question, of whether we really need all this college the so called experts are touting?
