September 1st is Emma M. Nutts Day
8.31.2010
Directory assistants and switchboard operators all over the world, owe a debt of gratitude to a woman with a nutty name.
On September 1st, 1878, the first woman telephone operator started working for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company.
The company was hiring young men first, but they lacked the patience and discipline to do the job properly. This caused the company to turn to women to “man” (no pun intended) the phone system — including Emma’s sister Stella.
Any way you spell it, with a nutty name like Emma M. Nutts, it’s nuts to everybody.
